TMA Foundation Honors Beaumont Physician with “Heart of Gold” Award - 12/10/2024

Beaumont neurosurgeon Mark Kubala, MD, was awarded the Texas Medical Association Foundation’s highest honor, the Heart of Gold Award. The foundation presents the award to outstanding individuals who embody a “gold standard” of volunteerism and have made a measurable impact on the foundation’s mission through gifts and leadership.

Unlocking Doors: Diversity in Medicine Scholarship Program Connects Students with Mentors - 10/21/2023

When the Texas Medical Association founded its Diversity in Medicine Scholarship Program in 1998 to diversify the physician workforce, Dr. Ramamurthy became both a contributor and a mentor to students who receive the scholarships. “When you’re mentoring students, one of the things that you want them to understand is that you’re somebody they can talk to who is not only there as a teacher, but as a friend,” she said. Other top donors to the Diversity in Medicine Scholarship serve voluntarily as mentors to student awardees. TMA encourages those arrangements because they can benefit both parties.

The Texas Medical Association created the Minority Scholarship Program in 1998 to help diversify the physician workforce to meet Texans’ health care needs. Since then, it has awarded 136 scholarships totaling $847,500. Students entering medical school in 2019 can apply now.

Sinan Ali Bana, a third-year medical student at Texas A&M Health Science Center College of Medicine, has joined the Texas Medical Association Foundation (TMAF) Board of Trustees. He begins his one-year term at TMA Fall Conference in September, after being selected in May to serve.
