Resolution: 101: Medical Student Voting Privileges on Councils and Committees

Whereas, The TMA Bylaws provide "at the discretion of the president, representatives recommended by the Resident and Fellow Section, Medical Student Section, and TMA Alliance may be designated special appointees to association councils and committees" 1 ; and

Whereas, The TMA Bylaws also provide that "voting privileges may be granted to medical students and alliance members at the discretion of the council or committee to which they are appointed" [1] ; and

Whereas, For a number of years, medical students have served on virtually all councils and committees and bring unique skills and perspectives to the activities of these committees; and

Whereas, Full medical student participation at council and committee levels provides an excellent opportunity for meaningful leadership development within the association; and

Whereas, Of the 110 council and committee meetings held since Summit 2003, medical students have attended and actively participated in 89 of those meetings; and

Whereas, The medical student member on the Board of Trustees has full rights of participation, including the right to vote; and

Whereas, Students holding slotted positions on the Texas Delegation to the AMA and Committee on Membership have full rights of participation, including the right to vote; therefore be it

RESOLVED, That medical student members serving as special appointees to association councils and committees be granted the right to vote and count toward a quorum.

 

 

[1] 11.30  Special appointees may be designated to other organizations at the discretion of the president. Appointees shall establish liaison between the association and these organizations. At the discretion of the president, representatives recommended by the Resident and Fellow Section, Medical Student Section, and TMA Alliance may be designated special appointees to association councils and committees. Appointments shall be made by the president for one year. Resident and Fellow Section representatives shall have voting privileges; voting privileges may be granted to medical students and alliance members at the discretion of the council or committee to which they are appointed. Even though special appointees may have the right to vote, they shall not be counted in the determination of a quorum.
