Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, the ability to test people has been one of the most pressing – and confusing – aspects of treating and stopping the spread of the illness.
In fact, adequate testing is one of the key components to Gov. Greg Abbott’s plan to safely reopen Texas businesses and social activities.
Although state and federal health authorities have published guidance and information, physicians and patients continue to have multiple questions on the types of tests that are available as well as their purposes, limitations, restrictions, and potential risks.
That’s why the Texas Medical Association COVID-19 Task Force created a “how to” testing guide that covers:
- The basics on PCR (molecular), serology (antibody), point-of-care, and at-home tests;
- How to check which tests have been authorized by the Food and Drug Administration;
- How to access these tests, including private and hospital laboratories, and drive-thru screening locations.
- Getting paid, including links to coding guidance and major insurance companies’ policies.
This quick guide serves as a supplement to the much more comprehensive frequently asked questions (FAQ) document on testing that the Task Force published.
Find both documents, along with the latest news, resources, and government guidance on TMA’s COVID-19 Resource Center, which is updated regularly.
