REPORT OF BOARD OF TRUSTEES
BOT Report 6-A-07
Subject: TMA Minority Scholarship Program
Presented by: C. Bruce Malone, MD, Chair
Twenty-two $5,000 scholarships have been given to underrepresented minority medical students in Texas since the TMA Minority Scholarship Program was established in 1998. Each of the eight Texas medical schools has received an award and the rotation schedule will continue as funds are available. With the Dec. 1, 2006, cutoff for donations toward the 2007-2008 school year, the TMA Foundation has collected $36,825. These funds are sufficient for seven whole and one partial scholarship. Monies from the Minority Scholarship operating account will be used to supplement the eighth award in the amount of $3,175.
The program is solely funded by voluntary contributions and the net assets of the operating fund as of Dec. 31, 2006, equal $12,087.
This year's eight scholarships will be awarded to students matriculating at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center School of Medicine, Texas A&M University Health Science Center College of Medicine, The University of Texas Southwestern Medical School, The University of Texas Medical School at San Antonio, The University of Texas Medical Branch, Baylor College of Medicine, The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston Medical School, and University of North Texas Health Science Center at Fort Worth. Candidate applications must be received by TMA Student Loans Department by April 3. Scholarship recipients will be notified by April 16 and the presentation ceremony will occur at TexMed 2007 on April 27.
Although the U.S. Supreme Court ruling in 2003 allows race to be used in admissions and financial aid processes of academic institutions, few have altered their financial aid policies to re-establish minority-specific programs. This leaves the TMA scholarship program as one of the few available in the state for underrepresented minority students seeking a career in medicine.
