Subject: Continuing Medical Education Programs

Live Presentation, Internet, Home Study, and Videotape Courses
The committee offers 15 CME courses, all of which been designated as ethics and/or professional responsibility education. The courses are available for presentation by regional education team members at county medical society, hospital medical staff, and other meetings. The courses also are available on the Internet and through home study, and "Physician Stress/Burnout" is available on videotape. During 2006, team members gave 45 presentations to 2,003 participants. Another 1,694 physicians completed the courses by Internet, home study, and videotape.
Review of three courses was completed during 2006, and review of another five will be completed this year. Three new courses: "Monitoring Physicians in Recovery," "Spirituality in Medicine," and "How to Create Balance in Your Life" were scheduled for completion in April. Eight courses will be scheduled for review during 2008.
It's A Family Affair: Addiction in the Physician and Its Impact on the Family (2006 and 2007)
Workshops were held in Fort Worth, Houston, Lubbock, and San Antonio during 2006. More than 50 physicians, medical students, and spouses attended the workshops. Workshops during 2007 will be presented in El Paso, Galveston, Tyler, and Amarillo.
Disruptive Behavior in Physicians (2006)
"Disruptive Behavior in Physicians" was held October 21 in Lost Pines. There were 96 participants.
PHR Retreat (2007)
The annual physician health and rehabilitation retreat was held January 20 in San Antonio. The theme was stressors in the professional life cycle, and there were 30 participants.
Training Session (2007)
A training session was held January 19 in Lost Pines. The program is designed for current education team members and individuals interested in becoming a team member. Nine participants attended.
Physician Health Program and State Medical Board Relationships: Keeping Patients Safe (2007)
On Sept. 14, the committee will sponsor a conference, "Physician Health Program and State Medical Board Relationships: Keeping Patients Safe" in Dallas. The program is designed for physicians of all specialties, including leadership, board members, and pertinent staff members of TMA, TOMA, TMB, and others interested in learning more about how state physician health programs and medical boards interface with each other to effectively address physician impairment, and how to appropriately identify, intervene with, and monitor physicians with mental health disorders. The committee and TMB will give presentations, as will representatives from other state physician health programs and medical boards about their programs and interface with each other. Other topics will include "Co-Occurring Mood Disorders in Addicted Physicians," "Pharmaceuticals to Treat Mental Health Disorders," "Personality Traits and Disorders Common to Physicians," and "Return to Work Monitoring for Mental Health Disorders." "What Constitutes Impairment? Doctors' Safeguards to Improve Medical Practice," will be presented by panel members.
TMA House of Delegates: TexMed 2007
