The TMA/AMA Medical Student Section (MSS) chapter at UT Health Rio Grande Valley School of Medicine started 2021 off strong with community outreach and advocacy efforts.
- The chapter hosted its first two resolution workshops and has increased its presence at TMA First Tuesdays at the Capitol.
- With support from AMA through a community service grant, the chapter rolled out a disaster preparedness project in response to the devastation of the winter storm in the Rio Grande Valley. The project includes a disaster preparedness fair, distributing disaster kits, and working with local special needs populations to create individual/family-specific plans in cases of disaster. The chapter completed 30 preparedness kits.
- Created a committee with Hidalgo-Star County Medical Society to have a local scholarship program for medical students. The goal is to relieve part of the financial burden that medical students experience after leaving medical school.
Additionally, the support and cooperation of members of the UTRGV TMA/AMA MSS made these projects possible. UTRGV SOM has many students that lead and dedicate time to the TMA and the AMA as council members, committee members and appointees.
