The Texas Medical Association can now aid physicians in critical decisions around using augmented intelligence (AI) in their practices, thanks to the insight of AI experts recently added to the association’s Committee on Health Information Technology (HIT).

“I’m a big advocate of using AI for tasks that are secretarial,” Kimberly Monday, MD said, having been appointed as an AI expert to the Committee on HIT. “There is excitement about what AI can do to save [time] and overhead, or in terms of scheduling, prior authorization, and note-taking.”

TMA’s ongoing Practice Well podcast has launched the series AI in Health Care, now with two episodes available. “A Doctor’s Perspective on Getting Started” with Rehan Ahmed, MD, serves as an introduction to the wide landscape of AI applications, while “Vetting Tools and Vendors” with Harvey Castro, MD, provides guidance on choosing the right tools for individual practices and smoothly integrating them. Like and follow Practice Well on your listening platform to be served future episodes.

Other tools are TMA member-exclusive and will require log-in to access. For instance, physicians can use a new comprehensive questionnaire to help evaluate AI vendors and products and find the right questions and criteria to use. The tool is available in Excel, allowing physicians to modify relevant questions and record the answers given to give a side-by-side comparison.

For practices beginning to implement AI, TMA now offers a policies and procedures document, adaptable to specific needs and parameters. This outline can ensure consistent and appropriate AI use throughout the practice.
