It’s a common dose of reality for many aspiring physicians: “I got accepted to medical school! Now how will I pay for it?”
If you know a well-deserving person who recently got accepted to a Texas medical school, let him or her know the Texas Medical Association is here with financial resources to ease the cost of education and training for students.
“Medical school is a stressful time. … Any scholarship that eases the financial burden on students means more than words can say. I am so thankful for the assistance from the TMA,” said Spencer Barrett, a fourth-year student at Baylor College of Medicine and a 2021 recipient of the Harris County Medical Society Alliance Scholarship.
Brooke Birks, a first-year student at Sam Houston State University College of Osteopathic Medicine, successfully took advantage of applying to TMA’s Minority Scholarship Program. The program awards $10,000 scholarships to students from underrepresented minorities – Black, Hispanic/Latino, or Native American – in medical school and the physician workforce.
“As an underrepresented minority and a first-generation college graduate and medical student, this award will ease some of the financial and emotional burden I have experienced so far,” Ms. Birks said.
Once students have begun their studies, they can apply for a variety of scholarships offered through TMA to qualified Texas medical students. TMA also offers low-interest loans, available to Texas medical students and resident physicians.
The TMA Foundation (TMAF) funds the Minority Scholarship Program with generous support from the Bayardo Minority Scholarship Trust and Patrick Y. Leung, MD, Minority Scholarship Endowment at TMAF, and annual gifts from H-E-B, TMAF donor physicians and their families, and TMA county medical societies.
